Dental Implants: A Step-by-Step Guide

Missing a tooth can feel like more than just a gap in a smile. It can make eating uncomfortable, speaking feel awkward, and confidence take a hit. For many patients, dental implants offer the closest thing to a natural tooth replacement.

But the process can sound intimidating. What actually happens during implant treatment? How long does it take? Does it hurt? Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough of what patients can expect when choosing dental implants at Dr. Teeth.

Dental Implants: A Step-by-Step Guide in Reno, NV

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that we surgically place into the jawbone. Over time, the bone fuses with the titanium through a process called osseointegration. That creates a permanent, stable foundation for a replacement tooth.

Unlike dentures or bridges, implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. They stand on their own, just like natural roots.

We place all types of dental implants in our office, from single tooth replacements to implant-secured dentures and All-on-X full-arch restorations.

Step 1: The Consultation and Treatment Planning

Every implant journey starts with a conversation. During the consultation, we take a close look at the patient’s oral health. We use digital X-rays and 3D imaging to examine the jawbone density and identify any potential issues.

Some patients need a bone graft if the jawbone has thinned out over time. Others may need to address gum disease before moving forward. We go over every detail so there are no surprises. At the end of this step, patients have a clear treatment plan with timelines and costs.

Step 2: Placing the Implant

On the day of the procedure, we numb the area completely. For anxious patients, we offer sedation options to help them feel relaxed throughout.

Then we make a small incision in the gum tissue and carefully drill a tiny hole into the jawbone. The titanium implant post goes into that hole. We close the gums over or around the implant, and the procedure is done.

Most patients tell us the process feels similar to having a tooth removed: some pressure, but no sharp pain. The appointment usually takes about an hour for a single implant.

Step 3: The Healing Period

The implant needs time to fuse with the jawbone, and that takes several months. During this period, patients go about normal life while the bone grows around the implant.

We give each patient a temporary tooth or a flipper to wear if the implant is in a visible area. That way, no one has to walk around with a gap in the smile while healing.

Step 4: Placing the Abutment

Once healing is complete, patients come back for a short appointment to place the abutment. The abutment is a small connector piece that attaches to the top of the implant. It acts as the anchor for the final crown.

We numb the area again, open the gum slightly, and screw the abutment into place. This appointment is much shorter than the implant placement, usually about 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 5: Attaching the Final Crown

The last step happens a couple of weeks later. We take impressions of the implant site so the dental lab can custom-make a crown that matches the patient’s natural teeth perfectly.

When the crown arrives, patients return for a final appointment. We check the fit, adjust the bite if needed, and permanently attach the crown to the abutment.

At this point, patients can expect to eat, speak, and smile just like they did with their natural teeth.

How Long Does the Whole Process Take?

From consultation to final crown, the timeline usually spans three to six months. The healing period is the longest part, and we cannot rush it. The bone needs time to integrate with the implant for long-term success.

Are Implants Worth It?

For most patients, absolutely. Dental implants can last 20 years or more with proper care. They look and feel natural. They prevent bone loss in the jaw. And they do not require special cleaning routines, just brushing and flossing like normal teeth.

Our team at Dr. Teeth has helped countless Reno patients rebuild their smiles with dental implants. Every case is different, and we tailor the approach to each patient’s unique needs and goals.
