Porcelain Veneers: Are They Right for You?

We hear this question a lot from patients who look in the mirror and wish their smile looked different, but can’t quite put a finger on what’s bothering them. Maybe the teeth are too small. Maybe there’s a gap. Maybe old stains won’t budge no matter how much whitening gel gets used. For many of those patients, porcelain veneers end up being the answer they didn’t know existed. But veneers aren’t right for everyone. Here’s what patients should understand before coming in for a consultation.

Porcelain Veneers: Are They Right for You? in Reno, NV

What Exactly Is a Porcelain Veneer?

A veneer is an ultra-thin shell of dental porcelain that bonds to the front surface of a tooth. Think of it like a contact lens for the tooth. It covers the visible part while leaving the back of the tooth untouched.

We custom-make each veneer to match the shape, size, and color of the surrounding teeth. When placed correctly, no one can tell it’s there. The smile just looks naturally improved.

What Veneers Can Fix

Veneers are incredibly versatile. We most often recommend them for patients with:

  • Stubborn stains: Professional whitening works well for most yellowing, but some discoloration goes deeper. Tetracycline stains, fluorosis, and dark spots from old fillings don’t always respond to bleach. Veneers could cover those stains completely.
  • Chipped or worn edges: Small chips add up over time. Maybe a patient grinds teeth at night. Maybe an old fall caused minor damage. Veneers help restore that smooth, even edge.
  • Gaps between teeth: For patients who don’t want orthodontic treatment, veneers could close small gaps in a matter of weeks rather than months or years.
  • Misshapen teeth: Some teeth come in naturally too small, too pointy, or oddly proportioned. Veneers help reshape them into something more balanced.
  • Teeth that look too short: Sometimes enamel wears down over decades, making teeth appear stubby. Veneers work to restore original length and proportion.

What Veneers Cannot Fix

Veneers are not a solution for every dental problem. Patients with significant tooth decay, active gum disease, or large existing fillings may need other treatments first. We also do not recommend veneers for patients who grind their teeth heavily at night without wearing a protective guard. The grinding can crack or chip the porcelain.

Patients who are missing back teeth or need orthodontic work for severe crowding should explore those options before considering veneers. Our team walks each patient through their specific situation during a consultation.

The Process: What to Expect

Getting veneers typically takes two or three visits.

  • First visit: We talk about goals, look at the teeth, and determine whether veneers are a good fit. If yes, we remove a tiny amount of enamel, about half a millimeter, from the front of each tooth receiving a veneer. This makes room for the porcelain so the teeth do not look bulky. Then we take impressions and place temporary veneers.
  • Second visit: About two weeks later, the permanent veneers arrive from the dental lab. We check the fit and color, then bond each veneer to the tooth using a strong dental cement. A special light hardens the bond instantly.
  • Follow-up visit: We see patients a few weeks later to check how everything feels and make small adjustments if needed.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

With good care, porcelain veneers last 10 to 15 years. They do not stain like natural teeth, so patients never need to whiten them. But veneers are not indestructible. We advise patients to avoid biting into hard items like ice, pens, or fingernails.

Routine brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings keep both the veneers and the underlying teeth healthy.

Starting the Conversation

Veneers represent an investment in a smile. Not everyone needs them, and not everyone is a candidate. But for patients who have lived with stains, chips, or gaps for years, they can be life-changing.

Our team at Dr. Teeth has placed countless veneers for Reno patients. We would love to talk through the options. Schedule a consultation, and we will help figure out what makes sense.
